GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATIONS

Will be enforced from 25th May 2018

The GDPR is designed to protect all EU citizens from privacy and data breaches and to manage how organisations deal with data privacy.

The regulations grants Data Subjects (you and me) a number of new rights in relation to how and what information is stored about them.

Personal Data is ANY information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified.

It applies to both automated and personal data and to manual filing systems.

The changes in law will mean all companies will have to adopt appropriate organisational and technical measures to protect personal data.

WHY IS GDPR SO IMPORTANT?

Organisations found in breach of the Regulation can expect administrative fines of up to 4% of annual global turnover or €20 million – whichever is greater.

Fines of this scale could very easily lead to business insolvency.

The Brexit Question!

UK organisations handling personal data will still need to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), regardless of Brexit. The government has confirmed that the Regulation will apply, a position that has been confirmed by the Information Commissioner.
